Have you ever noticed the anchor on the harbour top? In
December 1943 the Mary B Mitchell was sailing from Dublin to Silloth when she was caught by a south easterly gale which blew out her sails. The crew were eventually rescued by the Kirkcudbright lifeboat Morison Watson. To read the full story of the ship’s life and eventual shipwreck go to https://www.scottishshipwrecks.com/mary-b-mitchell/. Apart from this anchor, brought here by the late Donald Tait,
all that is left of the ship is a mass of rusty metal on the west side of the bay near Senwick Churchyard.
Further to the original article here a KHS member contacted us to say- “In autumn of 2022 when we were sailing back from the south we got storm bound in Arklow, Ireland. We visited the Maritime Museum in the Bridgwater shopping centre where we found letters and models charting the life of the Mary B. Mitchell.”
The photographs she took in the Museum can be seen below.
